Psychological Therapies

Psychotherapy is a general term for giving people an opportunity to explore their emotional issues which affect them and prevent them from leading a contented and fulfilled life. This exploration usually helps a person to improve their outlook on life, relationships, work and psychological well-being.

Psychotherapy offers a confidential, safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment to explore those emotional difficulties.

By gaining insight, a person can discover his or her own potential or generate personal solutions. There are many different types of therapies based on different theories on human emotional development and behaviour.

So a psychotherapist is a professional who is qualified in one or several psychological therapies.

The Integrative Approach

The integrative approach is a holistic and dynamic one that requires a wide and varied therapeutic knowledge and experience allowing the therapist to tailor different therapeutic techniques to meet the specific needs of each individual client.

Although many people share common problems, everyone is unique in their experience of emotional distress. Within my approach, therapeutic interventions will always be based first on a psychological assessment for each individual case and then tailored to the individual's needs - not the other way around.

Within my integrative approach, clients are always given the choice of the therapeutic intervention which is best suited to their particular problem.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR is the first line psychological treatment recommended by the Department of Health in the National Institute for Clinical Excellence NICE guidelines (2005) for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic memories in the UK. It is now the recommended treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in seven countries.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapeutic procedure that was originated and developed by F. Shapiro in 1987 mainly for healing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic memories. More than one million sufferers worldwide have been successfully treated with EMDR.

EMDR is a complex, powerful, rapid and very effective psychological therapy with long-lasting effects. Like with other established psychological therapies, EMDR integrates many of the fundamental elements imperative and necessary for good treatment. It is a holistic approach which addresses emotions, thoughts, physical conditions and behaviours.

It is an evidence based psychological treatment considered the most rapid and effective treatment for traumatic memories and PTSD compared to any other psychological therapies and drug medication.

People are astonished at how quickly their anxiety reduces, and how their sleep quality and life in general improve after only few sessions of EMDR treatment.

Over the years, EMDR has been found equally effective for other emotional disorders such as:

  • Panic Attacks, General Anxiety Disorder, Phobia
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Victims of Road Traffic Accidents
  • Excessive grief
  • Depression
  • Physical Pain
  • Addictions
  • Fear of Public Speaking
  • Performance Anxiety

EMDR is cost effective. The average number of sessions for a single traumatic event is between 1 to 6 extended sessions. For multiple traumas and more complex cases, it takes longer but patients are very quickly relieved from their emotional distress and symptoms within the first few sessions of treatment even in patients who have been suffering for decades or those for whom other psychological treatments have failed.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a well researched form of psychological treatment which looks at both the thoughts (cognitions), beliefs, attitudes and behaviours and how they influence and maintain current problems. This particular therapeutic approach uses varied strategies such as challenging patients' thinking styles and behavioural techniques to help patients not only to understand what maintain their current difficulties but give them tools to help them to change and deal with their anxiety or depression.

Problems such as depression, anxiety and phobias can be triggered or fuelled by certain ways of thinking. The therapist helps the patient to identify, understand and challenge the underlying thought patterns which feed the psychological distress and help develop effective strategies for overcoming this.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has be shown through research to be helpful for a wide range of psychological and emotional problems:

  • Depression
  • Panic attacks, anxiety and phobias
  • Obsessessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Low-self esteem
  • Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia
  • Pain management
  • Insomnia
  • Relationship issues
  • Chronic worry
  • Agoraphobia
